The trail...
The trail starts at the parking area below Tendele rest
camp and follows the Tugela Gorge trail for a short distance. It branches to the right
after the first stream crossing and follows the contour of the hills towards the
Amphitheatre. The Policeman's Helmet is constantly visible accross the Vemvaan valley (see
picture nr. 1). After about 5 km, a shady picnic spot next to the Vemvaan river is
reached. This is the ideal spot for tea. This is the last place to fill your water
bottles. The trail then make a 180 degree turn and slowly ascends towards the Policeman's
Helmet. The route passes below the Helmet and then ascends up the cliff with the help of a
short, wooden, ladder. Return by the same route.
Not a difficult route, but quite far. Always be prepared
for bad weather. After we reached the Helmet, the weather suddenly turned bad. We made an
emergency exit via the old, direct route, which is very slippery. |
