ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The Cascades. There are also two natural swimming pools near the camp site.

Approximately 80 km walks in the park.

ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The start of the Tugela Gorge day walk to the Tunnel and Amphitheatre - a long walk along the Tugela river passing through yellow wood forests. The unfit and slow walker should not continue to the foot of the Tugela falls but turn back just after the Tunnel or else they will not complete the journey back to the camp during daylight. ± 14 km return to the tunnel or 22 km return to the foot of the falls.

ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

7 km into the Tugela Gorge - the by-pass with the tunnel in the background. Climb up with the chain ladder, crawl up a narrow gully assisted by steel pens in the rock and a wire. Turn left at the first footpath and descend to the back of the tunnel. Difficult, but we did it with a four year old on the back.

ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The exit of the tunnel. Jump into the pool and swim through. Walk through the tunnel to bypass the gully and chain ladders.

ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The Mud Slide right in the middle of the photograph as seen from the Mahai Camping site - not for those with a fear of  heights (like me). I would recommend going up with the Mud Slide and descend with the crack and not the way recommended in the guide. Very steep and dangerous - not for small children (we descended with a four year old on the back).

ROYAL NATAL NATIONAL PARK

The Policeman's Helmet. Compare it's size with the size of the children next to it. Quite a long walk.
